چکیده

A hidden failure embedded DC model of power transmission systems has been developed to study the power law distributions observed in North American blackout data. We investigate the impacts of several model parameters on the global dynamics and evaluate possible mitigation measures. The main parameters include system loading level, hidden failure probability, spinning reserve capacity and control strategy. The sensitivity of power-law behavior with respect to each of these four parameters and the corresponding blackout mitigation are discussed and illustrated via simulation results from the WSCC 179-bus equivalent system and the IEEE 118-bus test system. It is our intention that this study can provide guidance on when and how the suggested mitigation methods might be effective. q 2005 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Evaluating the potential of cascading failure occurrence due to line outage in power systems by information theory method and radial base functions

In power systems, a connected topology is created to increase reliability and economic performance. Increasing dimensions of power systems on the one hand and the need to continuously monitor power systems for secure operation on the other challenge the evaluation of power system security. In such conditions, due to economic conditions and considering the fast growth of consumers in a power sys...

Cascading Failure Risk Assessment Considering Protection System Hidden Failures

Cascading failure plays an important role in blackouts. Complex network theory, with the disadvantage of ignoring some of physical features of the power systems, is often utilized to model the cascading failure evolution processes. In this paper, a new risk assessment method based on evolution procedure and dynamic fault trees (DFTs), is proposed to model cascading failures in power systems. DF...

Modeling and Identification of Worst-Case Cascading Failures in Power Systems

Cascading failures in power systems normally occur as a result of initial disturbance or faults on electrical elements, closely followed by errors of human operators. It remains a great challenge to systematically trace the source of cascading failures in power systems. In this paper, we develop a mathematical model to describe the cascading dynamics of transmission lines in power networks. In ...

Assessment of Dynamic System Cascading Collapse in the Determination of Sensitive Transmission Line in a Power System

This paper presents a computationally accurate technique used to determine the estimated average probability of a dynamic system cascading collapse considering the effect of hidden failure on a protection system. This requires an accurate calculation of the probability of hidden failure as it will give significant effect on the results of the estimated average probability of dynamic system casc...

An Initial Complex Systems Analysis of the Risks of Blackouts in Power Transmission Systems

Electric power transmission systems are a key infrastructure and blackouts of these systems have major direct and indirect consequences on the economy and national security. In particular, electric power blackouts have cascading effects on other vital infrastructures. While it is useful to analyze the detailed causes of individual blackouts, in this paper we focus on the intrinsic dynamics of s...
